A SPECIAL NOTE TO ATHEISTS
Alright, I know you guys come here, read a little of the first page, and then bad-mouth this site without actually knowing much about it. I also know that a lot of you are ex-Catholics and that most of you are not even parents!
Still, I want you to get something out of this, too, so let’s discuss atheism for a bit, and then why Christianity is better.
Most atheists I have ever known were young men rebelling against their parents, God’s commandments, their old church, or something unhappy in their childhood. That isn’t a good reason to adopt a philosophy which puts you in Hell, and neither are any of the arguments I’ve heard promoting atheism.
Let’s answer some of them now:
Argument #1: “There is no proof of God.” Sure there is. Just look around and you’ll discover everything proves God: people, animals, trees, dirt, rocks, water, the sun, the moon, and everything else did not spring up out of nothing, by chance, on its own power. All of these things did not come from aliens or always magically exist “just because.” It’s ludicrous and lazy to even assert that.
Think of it this way: “The building is proof of the builder.” Every time. Somewhat similar to the way your existence is proof of your ancestor’s existence, the existence of Creation is proof of God’s existence. (God is “the Builder.”) Now, where is the proof that neither God nor your ancestors exist? If Christians have to prove our beliefs then so do you, and if you don’t have any proof, you should rethink your atheism. You also need an explanation of how everything got here in the first place.
Argument #2: “I don’t believe in things I can’t see.” If that’s true, then you also don’t believe in radio waves, the wind, your own thoughts, foreign countries you’ve never visited, the ocean floor, mountaintops, most of the world’s 8 billion people, and lots of other things. You haven’t seen all that I’ve just listed, right?
Logic dictates that some things may not be visible because, 1) they exist but your eyes haven’t seen them or 2) they don’t exist. God is option #1.
Argument #3: “I believe in Science / I follow Science.” So do Christians – God created science. 🙂
Argument #4: “Atheists can be just as moral as Christians.” In theory, maybe sometimes. In practice, almost never. First of all, there IS no moral code for atheists. For the ones I have known, the whole point of being an atheist was not having to subject yourself to some code of conduct from God or any church. (“No rules!”) A buddy of mine became an atheist after supposedly being a Baptist when he was younger. (I say supposedly because he was taught little religion by his parents and I’m not sure he had ever been to church.) He soon rejected all morality and decided that nothing was immoral for him, including incest, slavery, etc. (Yuck.)
And that seems to be the natural progression: If there is not a higher power that determines morality for you, then you either reject the concept of morality outright or you become a moral relativist who just makes up your own rules to suit what you want to do at certain moments in your life. You end up saying things like, “What’s right for you may not be right for me, and what’s right for me may not be right for you.” By contrast, a person who accepts Christianity agrees to follow an objective, unchanging moral code instituted by God, with rules like “love your neighbor as you love yourself,” “thou shalt not commit adultery,” “thou shalt not kill,” etc.
Speaking of killing, I’ve heard atheists joke about trying to kill their conscience (which was instilled in them by their religious parents) so they could commit sin without feeling guilty about it.
Guys, you will never find happiness by “killing your conscience.” You will only become less of a person with more trouble sleeping at night while reflecting on your increasingly evil actions.
Nor will you find more happiness by adding more selfishness to your life. Selfish pleasure feels good at the moment, but it does not help your relationships and does not produce contentment. Often it makes long-term happiness impossible.
So, getting back to morality, which type of person would you logically expect to be more moral: a) a person who has been trained to follow God’s rules and believes there are serious consequences for not doing so, or b) a person who doesn’t even believe there ARE rules for him and is trying to kill his conscience?
Let’s go further: When push comes to shove, when the chips are down, when you have to make real sacrifices for what you believe, when everything you hold dear is at stake, when only morality stands in the way of getting what you really want or not losing what you really love – at that point, only the people who believe their salvation depends on their morality are going to remain moral while almost everybody else will just change their opinion of what morality is—or shuffle their feet and look away. That is why Christians are more moral than atheists.
Argument #5: “Most Christians are hypocrites.” Right. Everybody is a hypocrite to one degree or another, including you and me. Everybody is corrupt to one degree or another too, including you and me. If you are above the age of 18, you should realize that perfection doesn’t exist in this life. There are no perfect organizations and no perfect people. So then the big questions are actually these: “Which imperfect choice is the BEST choice?” and “Which imperfect people are the BEST people?”
The best people that I have personally found are Christians. If any group of people claims to be less hypocritical than Christians, it’s either because they lack self-awareness, they are lying, or they just admit that they embrace the awful things that Christians at least try to avoid. Again, let’s not forget the obvious: when a person tries to avoid something immoral, he usually does a better job of avoiding it than those people who are not even trying or don’t even believe it is immoral.
Argument #6: “The Bible is composed of fairy tales.” How would atheists know? They’ve never read it! I have. All of it—every single word. No fairy tales there! By the way, I am old enough to remember when atheists belittled Christians for opposing books that they (the Christians) had never read. Now I get to make fun of atheists for the same reason. 🙂 The people who disparage the Bible should read it first and then get back to me. We can discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this awesome book then.
Argument #7: “The leaders of the Church are corrupt.” Yep, some of them are now and some have been in the past. But again, if you honestly compare groups of people – including the Catholic leadership – to other groups, you will discover that practicing Christians are far less corrupt than any other group in every way. There are far fewer pedophiles, murderers, thieves, liars, etc. among us than the general population. Additionally, we are far more generous toward others with our money and time than any other group. That is ten times more true when you compare Christians to atheists. When was the last time an atheist group raised money to help feed/clothe/educate/heal the poor? I’ve never heard of such a thing, and the idea is laughable. By contrast, people in the Catholic Church (including the leaders) have fed, clothed, educated, and provided medical care for untold BILLIONS of the world’s population, mostly without repayment, for thousands of years. Mother Theresa, for example, did more for humanity by herself than all of the world’s atheists put together. There is quite a difference between the two groups’ behaviors, and it is worth pondering why that is so.
You also need to know what happened to the head of the American Atheist Center, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who is perhaps the most famous atheist of all time: She, along with her son and granddaughter, was kidnapped, robbed of $500,000, murdered, and dismembered by a fellow worker at the Atheist Center. Typical atheist behavior, right?
Maybe so. Atheism is the force behind the mass murders of history. Just in the past 100 years, atheist leaders have murdered over 50 million people – more than all the wars and natural disasters of the 20th century combined. And this number doesn’t even include the millions of people that Hitler (who supposedly wasn’t an atheist but loathed Christianity and Judaism) murdered at home and killed in his wars abroad.
These atheist leaders’ crimes are a thousand times more serious than any corrupt “Catholic” leader, in any age, who had to go against Jesus’ moral teaching (and Catholic teaching!) to do any wrong in the first place. A thousand times more serious! Wow. Christianity is, by far, superior to atheism and the non-Christian beliefs.
I could go on, but I will just end by encouraging you to critique atheism as hard as you critique Christianity; objectively look at the evidence for God; read the Bible; pray for wisdom; and become a Christian. Just think, you could finally show us “dumb” Catholics how it should be done! 🙂
Seriously, though, you’ll never really be happy as an atheist, and you’ll always have unnecessary problems and big regrets. We care about you guys, too, and we want you to have a better life on Earth and get to Paradise when you die. Your life is important, regardless of what you may have done in the past.
Think about it.
Sincerely,
TAC
